Bald Head day hike

I knew nothing about the Bald Head track and only found out about it from a free Albany tourist map which showed a little dotted line at the end of a road. Using the scale shown on this free map, I deducted that it was only a casual 10km walk. Dragging my brother along I told him, 'Lets go for a quick morning walk, it'll only take us two hours', he foolishly agreed to come and we packed two litres of water and a few muesli bars.

Arriving at the trail head, we found out that the trail was infact 16km long, described as "very challenging",  and to expect to take 6 to 8 hours to walk. We were aplomb to the situation, we arrived early and had the whole day ahead of us, water would be tight but knew we'd be fine.

Starting out the hike we followed some board walks up hill and were immediately granted with some amazing views. The boardwalk soon turned into planks of wood which were implemented to reduce trail erosion, the verdant scenery contrasted with the vivid blue waters of the ocean made for some stunning vistas. As we reached the top we soon figured out why this trail was described as very challenging, the trail dropped down a little bit and we could see the path lead straight back up ahead of us. We were in for a tough walk.

Fortunately looks can be deceiving, the planks soon diminished and we were now walking on a single trail sandy walk path. It was easy going, and although the trail was steep, we stopped plenty of times to catch our breath and enjoy the surrounding views. The trail leveled off a little, but continued to rise and fall until we reached the half-way point, where we were greeted by a large cairn to indicate the turn-around point, walking another 100m would leave you with a dead end into the ocean so it wasn't hard to figure out.

We stopped and ate our muesli bars, took some celebratory photos and made our way back. All-in-all it took us 3 and a half hours of walking a little quicker than the conservative time of 6 to 8, and headed back into town in time for lunch. It was a great day of hiking and definitely a day hike I'd recommend if you are in Albany.
